Both capture the vibrancy and immediacy of the city, encapsulated in the large architectural images or the small details of interiors, but always connect to the timeless. As Thomas Huxley said, “to the clear eye the smallest fact is a window through which the infinite may be seen”...and to see through these two talents both the large and the small the commonplace and everyday connect us to the extraordinary.

Thomas Schaller, author of book, Architecture in Watercolor, is esteemed for his contemporary, light filled city renderings, alive with presence. Pam Ingalls, acclaimed artist and teacher, is loved for her rich Russian impressionistic style that renders the smallest of objects with such presence that you feel someone has just entered or left the frame of the canvas.

Surprisingly, both artists convey light thrown on a subject that is simply not physical light, but a recognition of place or feeling, often evoking a playful interaction with the viewer. Each has that remarkable quality of familiarity in the exotic or a sense of a profound nature in the commonplace that sets them head and shoulders above the crowd.

An inner view of the city seen through these two artists eyes...a lover’s view of life rendered on canvas in oil or watercolors, is the basis of their collectors returned love for them. Connecting one, as real art always does, to what is timeless.

Fredericksburg Art Guild’s First Friday – January 6 - activities feature the opening reception for “Who Knew! oil painting show, and the January Artist of the Month Exhibit.

“Who Knew! “ is a juried art show honoring the students of Truby Hardin. The opening reception is First Friday, January 6 at 4 – 8 pm. Truby Hardin has been teaching art and painting since 1972. Upon her recent retirement from Kerr County, Truby has been teaching beginning oil painting at the Fredericksburg Art Guild.

The January Artist of the Month exhibit features photo montages by Fredericksburg native, Melissa Starry. Melissa likes to use various mediums to “build” a picture. The process of layering adds interest, drawing the viewer to see more than just the subject matter. Melissa’s pictures are primarily narrative and tell a visual story. Her work has won numerous awards over the years and is in private and public collections.

The Fredericksburg Art Guild represents over 20 Hill Country Artists and exhibits fine art, jewelry, sculpture, photography and more.

The Guild’s hours are 10 am to 4p.m. - open until 8 p.m. on the First Friday of every month. The Guild is closed on Tuesday and Wednesdays. Fredericksburg Art Guild’s First Friday – November 4

features the opening of the Guild’s Holiday Season exhibit.

The exhibit will show Christmas ornaments and small gifts along with ceramics,

oil, acrylic, pastel, and watercolor by Guild members who are local Hill Country artists.

Marion Loucks is featured as the November Artist of the Month. Marion holds a BFA from the University of Tulsa and has post graduate study in Arts Administration from Texas A & M, Corpus Christi. She has studied under Alexander Hogue, Dick Turner and Ann Templeton. Marion works primarily in oils and focuses on landscapes and botanicals of the Texas Hill Country and the Southwest. Her work is in private and public collections.

Lee Casbeer, a local of Johnson City, is the Good Art Company's featured artist of the month.
His new anatomical collection, "Ode to Anatomy" will be shown this Friday at art walk.
Lee and his brother Matt Casbeer, have painted many of the murals around Fredericksburg including ones at Java Ranch, Cross Roads and Hill Country Outfitters. Lee, studied under John McClusky with the Fredericksburg Art Guild, and spent 5 years in Italy developing his skills in painting and selling his art work in shows.
Lee has always been fascinated with anatomy and hopes to convey his paintings as vibrant and alive to the viewers as they get a glimpse at the inner workings of the human body in a more artistic rather than clinical way.Make sure to come in this Friday art walk to see some of Lee's intriguing paintings.

Marianna Lively is a local of Fredericksburg, and loves what she does.
Growing up on a ranch in the panhandle, she was always fortunate to be surrounded by big beautiful skies and rich colors. She absorbed many of these and portrays them in her impressionistic paintings in what she likes to call "a quiet way." She gets to paint everyday surrounded by the hill country and thinks life couldn't be better than that.
Marianna will be premiering her art at this coming art walk. Stop in to see some of her beautiful paintings, I'm sure they will inspire you just like they've inspired this "Lively" artist.

Artisans will open this month's First Friday Art Walk Fredericksburg by hosting a food drive for the Fredericksburg Food Pantry. Discounts are available on in stock art pieces when you generously support the Fredericksburg Food Pantry. The Food Pantry is in dire need of food, HEB gift cards & cash donations as they've seen a dramatic increase in need by our local residents. A list of acceptable food items will be available at Artisans' website http://www.artisansatrockyhill.com/ and lists will also be made available in the gallery.

Each donor will receive a 5% discount on their art purchases when bringing in 5 items from the list for the Fredericksburg Food Pantry or bring in 10 items for a 10% discount.

The Food Pantry has recently purchased land in Fredericksburg to construct a new facility. A donation jar will be in place at Artisans if you would like to assist the pantry in that fashion.

Artisans will host this very special food & funds drive through August 31st. All in-stock art pieces can be purchased at a discount just by bringing in some much needed items for the Pantry.

The Fredericksburg Food Pantry serves an average of 16 to 17 families per day though on June 8th, they assisted 35 families with food. Please help Artisans help the Fredericksburg Food Pantry and take home that special art piece at a reduced price.

Fredericksburg Art Guild's First Friday ~ August 5 ~ features the Annual All Member Show ~ "Our Gardens, Real and Imagined". Guild members are local Hill Country artists and their work includes paintings, sculpture, jewelry and ceramics. The exhibit is open through August 28, 2011.

Beth Hughes is featured as the August Artist of the Month. Beth has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at Arlington and has done independent studies with many well known artists while developing her own unique style. Beth works primarily with water media; watercolor, gouache, acrylic and water soluble pencils. She also works with printmaking techniques using oil based inks to create monotypes. Beth Hughes will show a group of paintings that reflect the influence of her travels in the Mediterranean. They contain references to her memories and impressions of the sea, the people, and the rich history of that area.

Bert Garcia will demonstrate her vivid acrylic painting technique 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Bert has studied with Joyce Combs for many years and always gives a popular painting demo.

Nancy Hardison is featured as the July Artist of the Month. Nancy has a degree in All Level Art Education from the University of Texas at Pan Am. She has taught art in the Texas school system for thirty years. In addition to teaching private art lessons and Community Education Classes, Nancy assisted with the research and planning for the book "150 Years of Art in Fredericksburg". Nancy's Artist of the Month Exhibit will include a retrospective of her work including oil painting, acrylic and clay pieces.

For the first time ever, Artisans at Rocky Hill, in conjunction with the Texas Society of Sculptors, brings to Fredericksburg a juried and judged sculpture show featuring the work of 22 Texas sculptors. Almost 40 pieces of art will be showcased during the month of May and into June. "Life in these Texas Hills" will open with a reception on Friday, May 6th at 5:00 pm. The show will spill into the now lush courtyard as outdoor pieces will be available for show and sell, as well. "Life in these Texas Hills" will be on display and for sale at Artisans through Saturday, June 4th. Fredericksburg Art Guild's First Friday features the opening reception of the 8th Annual Gillespie County Faces and Places juried art exhibit. Gillespie County Faces and Places is funded by the Pedernales Creative Arts Alliance/OktoberFest. The "Faces and Places" opening reception is 2 pm to 8 pm Friday with awards presented at 5:30 pm. "Gillespie County Faces and Places" is juried by Pat Sreenan. The show features work by artists who reside in the Fredericksburg Gillespie County area or who are members of county art organizations. First, second and third place awards will be given in three categories including Oil and Acrylic, Pastel and Watercolor and an open category for Photography, Colored Pencil, Collage and Printmaking. A Best of Show ribbon will also be awarded. Marla Moriarty, April Artist of the Month, will open a retrospective of her work which includes oil, watercolor and photography. Donnas' latest work will include an amazing array of fabulously fun acrylic paintings depicting bluebonnets, skies, horses and more! We are also excited to present her latest painting technique referred to as "original gouache (opaque watercolor)". The presentation of Donnas' most recent works will debut during an opening reception at Artisans on Friday, April 1st at 5:00 pm during First Friday Art Walk Fredericksburg. The February Artist of the Month features the bold, bright paintings of Bert Garcia.
Bert is a third generation Texan who managed her husband's medical practice, raised their children, taught school part-time and has a Masters in Floral Design. When Bert and her husband moved to Fredericksburg about 7 years ago, she attended a workshop by Joyce Combs, nationally renowned artist, and the rest is history. Her paintings reflect her love of life and are bold and bright.

Although he is well known for his pen and ink drawings and architectural renderings he has expanded his talent and skills in other mediums such as pastel and watercolor. Pat also studied oil painting for many years under Perry Nichols, a renowned Dallas artist.

Activities feature the opening reception for the "Who Knew" art exhibit and the January "Artist of the Month" exhibition.

Who Knew" is a juried art show honoring the students of Truby Hardin. The opening reception is First Friday - January 7th - 4 - 8 pm.. Truby Hardin has been teaching art and painting since 1972. Upon her recent retirement from Kerr County, Truby has been teaching beginning oil painting at the Fredericksburg Art Guild.

The January "Artist of the Month" features the abstract expressionist oil paintings of Suzuanne Fairbanks Mohart. Suzanne graduated from Kansas State University with a major in art. She has participated in art exhibits from Cambridge, Massachusetts to Miami, Florida. Suzanne curently lives in Fredericksburg and is a member of the Fredericksburg Art Guild, Die Kunstler and the Kerrville Art Club. Her work has won numerous awards over the years and is in private collections.

Currently Bonnie has become an accomplished oil painter whose subject matter includes scenes from her many travels as well as a variety of Texas landscapes.

"Reflecting on Life through Windows & Watercolor"

Artisans proudly presents “Reflecting on Life through Windows & Watercolor” featuring the art of Richard Ewen of Austin, Texas. The opening reception, showcasing his exciting new paintings is Friday, November 5th from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Mr. Ewen will be in the gallery to visit with guests about his fabulous new work. Wines by Torre di Pietra will be served along with cheeses from the Amish Market. Richard Ewen has been represented by Artisans at Rocky Hill since July of 2009.

Mr. Ewen will demonstrate his art on Saturday, November 6th from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm. The show will be in place through Saturday, November 20th.

Richard is an artist who has traveled to France annually for several years and used Paris and the French countryside as his subject. Always intrigued by the city and its architecture he has captured the past of Paris within its modern setting in his masterfully painted watercolors of the windows along the streets of Paris and the reflections emanating from the street, a still life within a cityscape. These intricate paintings are boldly colorful and contain many subtle images not seen at first glance. While based in Los Angeles Mr. Ewen painted many cityscapes. Moving from Los Angeles in 2006, Richard Ewen began painting images from Austin and the surrounding towns, including Fredericksburg. He is a member of the American Watercolor Society, the Texas Watercolor Society and the Plein Air Austin Group. In addition, Richard was awarded two Artist in Residence Sessions at Dorland Art Colony in Temecula, California and a Best of Show Award in the Eastern Washington Watercolor Society Show. Richard was recently mentioned in the September 25^th, 2009 edition of Arts Review, “Five New Talents”. Richard’s work has been widely collected throughout not only Texas but, across the globe.

Fredericksburg Art Guild’s First Friday – November 4 - activities feature the opening of the November Artist of the Month Exhibition and “A Holiday Affair” member exhibit that includes handcrafted, Christmas ornaments along with an oil painting demonstration.

The November Artist of the Month is Dottie King. Dottie’s exhibit will include her oil paintings as well as a new endeavor – gourd art. She has studied oil painting under local artist Nancy Martin. Dottie also serves as the Guild’s web administrator along with service on the Board of Directors. A talented artist and poet, Dottie’s beautiful, oil paintings will be enjoyed by all.

A special Oil Painting demonstration by Guild member Pat Renick is scheduled 1 pm to 3 pm. Pat has studied with many outstanding instructor s including Corrine Fowler, William H. October's "Artist of the Month"

Clifton Barr.

After graduation from a Texas high school in 1942, Clifton joined the Air Corp and was a radar operator on a B-17 which was equipped for air/sea rescue in China, India, Burma and the Pacific Theatre of operations. The visual experiences of his travels inspired him to pursue a degree in art from North Texas State University with majors in plastics/metals design and commercial art. He continued with graduate studies in the art of primitive people, science and the use of color and geometrical analysis. In 1957 he took advanced courses in design problem solving with Buckminister Fuller at the Contemporary Institute in Boston. Mr. Fuller remains a strong influence in Clif's work and in his life. Also, while working in the Boston area as a designer for Towle Silver Company, he studied drawing at the Museum of Fine Arts. His years of studying painting with mentor Otis Dozier at the Museum of Fine Arts in Dallas resulted in a lifelong friendship with Otis and his wife, Velma, who is an internationally known metal smith; and she continues to provide inspiration for Clif's work and in his life. Other work experiences include director of design for Plata Elegante Silver Company in Monterey, Mexico; aerospace designer, including the cockpit design of the A-7 aircraft; designer of lamps and lighting fixtures, decorative home furnishings and multi-faceted technical and media design. Clif has won awards for both his sculpture and painting, but resists competition, preferring work and exploration in many media to constantly create something new. He refuses to be limited by any materials or to be bound to any style, fashion or ism.

Nature is going to be what she is. An unending visual display, unexpected power, surprise happenings and abrupt changes stimulate me to make a response to nature. An unending flow of new information including works of other artists, writers, the incredible sounds of music and the revelations of science add to the inner urge to respond by creating something new.
As I respond through painting and sculpture, I find out more . . . and the more I find out, the more I respond." .

Note: Due to an unfortunate fall, Clif had a serious injury and is now in rehabilitation.
He will not be present at the Guild on October's First Friday Art Walk., however there will be a display of his work for all to come and see. We will miss him and hope to be able to have him back in the future.

Artisans at Rocky Hill, A Gallery of Fine Works, proudly presents “Fall Fantasies” featuring the art of husband and wife Linda Rauch and Rick Hewitt. Exciting new art pieces will be presented at an opening reception on Friday, October 1st during First Friday Art Walk Fredericksburg from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Be the first to see the new creations of this very talented husband and wife team, who will be in the gallery during the opening reception. Demonstrations by Linda and Rick will take place on Saturday, October 2nd from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm. Their “Fall Fantasy” show will be on display and available for purchase through Saturday, October 16th.

Linda and Rick, of Spicewood, have been represented by Artisans at Rocky Hill since the spring of 2009. The work of both artists has been wildly popular with gallery guests and their work is favored throughout the Texas Hill Country, New Mexico and beyond.
Linda’s art is a combination of fantasy and representational realism. Most of her brightly colored acrylic paintings evolve from her imagination. Linda’s flower paintings are impressionistic in nature while her “hard edge fantasy” pieces combine the surrealistic world of dreams with her own mind’s eye. This intriguing style created by Linda is reminiscent of Gustaf Klimpt pattern wise, and poster like in its rendering. Linda’s work is always from the heart and will produce a mood when it is viewed.

The art of Rick Hewitt, husband to Linda Rauch, combines copper with fire and chemical treatment to create interesting and colorful adornments for the outdoors. Texture is hammered into the copper by hand and colors are the result of a special chemical burn. Rick’s Copper Wind Dancers along with hand-created feather clusters have been very popular with gallery visitors. The beautiful Hill Country where Rick lives has influenced his nature oriented colors and designs. New sculptural designs in copper will be presented during the “Fall Fantasies” show.

Artisans at Rocky Hill features the most diverse collection of fine craft alongside fine art in the Texas Hill Country. Featured on a full-time basis are over 80 area artisans and craftsmen whose talents include paintings in oil, pastel, acrylic and watercolor, kinetic art, fine furnishings, textiles, wood turnings, pottery & ceramics, fused glass, mosaics, copper and iron sculpture, mixed media, lighting, mantles, mirrors, jewelry, and more.

In July of 2008, Artisans relocated to a beautiful historic rock building at 234 West Main St. just west of Marktplatz in Fredericksburg. The September Artist of the Month is Sheila Bingham. Sheila is a Fredericksburg native who grew up on her family’s ranch overlooking Enchanted Rock. Sheila gained an appreciation of nature’s beauty while attending both private and public art training. Sheila graduated from the University of Texas – Austin, first majoring in art and receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Math Education.

An award winning artist, Sheila’s beautiful, detailed work in colored pencil and acrylics captures the Hill Country’s landscapes, flowers and animals.

Fredericksburg Art Guild's First Friday - August 6 features the opening of the August Artist of the Month: Minerva Switzer.

Minerva moved from New York City to the Hill Country in 1985. She has been working as an artist for the last 20 years in oil, acrylic, pastel and photography. Minerva has won several awards for her work and is currently studying oil painting with Truby Hardin.

Brian Burckhardt from Hill Country Pottery will be performing live demonstrations on the wheel, creating his unique hand-made wine related works of art. Warren and Libby Bluntzer are avid collectors of vintage Navajo and Zuni jewelry. Their fascination with pre 1950s silver work and the search for unique turquoise stones has driven them to acquire bracelets, rings, belts, and necklaces that exemplify the unusual, the unique and the rare. Their collection has many artistic, beautifully crafted pieces that tell a story of a time when the stone guided the silversmith to create a work of art. The early turquoise mines of Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico provided legendary turquoise. The prized turquoise stones spoke to the imagination of all who viewed them. And so the Bluntzers will share their collection and offer a select number of unique pieces for purchase. Their hope is that you too will come to appreciate the mystique of the era and understand the collectors who are " In search of the Stone".

series of Texas wildflowers with a ten foot tall, blacksmith forged
sculpture by Logan Stollenwerck.
Logan has studied the Baroque/Renaissance style of figurative
sculptures at Studio Art Center International in Florence, Italy and apprenticed under the direction of Maestro Marco Paoli
at the Laboratorio de sculpturu in Pietrasanta, Italy.
Logan works in marble and metal.

Artisans at Rocky Hill proudly presents The Art of Tom and Maryneil Dance, “His, Hers and Possibly Yours”. An opening reception will be held in the gallery on Friday, May 7th from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Refreshments will be served. The presentation of Tom and Maryneil’s latest works will be for sale and on display through Saturday, May 22nd. Tom and Maryneil will be in attendance during the opening reception and again on Saturday, May 8th for demonstrations from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm. It was painting that drew Tom and Maryneil together. Maryneil had studied and painted in the summers in Hunt – pastel her medium of choice. Tom found New Mexico and Santa Fee a place to develop and sell his paintings in acrylic. As the two merged their talent, a new direction came forth. Maryneil began to paint animals, such as her wildly popular wolves and horses, and Tom found pleasure in the lush rural landscapes of Spring-time in the Texas Hill Country. Both lean on each other for advice and critique as their paintings evolve. Both are members of the Die Kunstler Von Fredericksburg (The Artists of Fredericksburg). Maryneil won People’s Choice and Artists Choice last year at their annual show and Tom serves as president. Their new life in the hills is now 10+ years old, and the paintings just keep coming. “There is a painting ready to happen just around the bend of the road”.

Texas wildflowers are the core inspiration for Linda's contemporary wildflower art series. The Fredericksburg Art Guild is hosting the 6th annual "Gillespie County Faces and Places" art exhibit, juried by Nancy Bush. The exhibit features a variety of artwork by local Hill Country artists, including oils, acrylics, pastels, watercolors, photography and mixed media.
"Gillespie County Faces and Places'" runs February 27 through April 25.

First Friday - March features Fredericksburg artist Dorothy Stehling.
Dorothy is a charter member of the Fredericksburg Art Guild and studied many years under famous Fredericksburg artist John McClusky. Dorothy works in acrylics and her artwork features many local scenes and wildlife around Fredericksburg.

The Fredericksburg Art Guild hours are 10 am to 4 pm. Open until 8 pm on the First Friday of every month. The Guild is closed on Tuesdays.
The Fredericksburg Art Guild is located behind the Nimitz Museum at 308 East Austin Street. Ample, free parking is available behind the Convention and Visitor's Center.

Please join us for an amazing array of art created by the chimpanzee residents of Chimp Haven in Keithville, Lousiana. Artisans is honored to have been invited to host this very special show featuring the fun and colorful art of 8 chimpanzees. Forty paintings will be available for show and sale during the 15 day hanging which closes on Saturday, February 20th at 5:30 pm.

Chimp Haven staff will be on hand during the reception and all day Saturday, Feb. 6th, to talk with gallery visitors about the artists who reside at the sanctuary - a retirement community for 130 chimpanzees retired from medical research or no longer wanted as pets or entertainers. Taking the art on the road and into communities, galleries and museums enables the staff and board members of Chimp Haven to bring awareness of the habitat to the public through art. Chimp Haven, The National Chimpanzee Sanctuary, is a 501(c)(3) organization. While showing at Artisans, all funds raised through painting sales, raffles and a silent auction will benefit Chimp Haven directly.

During the reception Fredericksburg artist, Melissa Starry, will create a mixed media collage incorporating chimp art and photos into the project. She will donate the finished piece for a raffle. Melissa has just returned from a visit to Chimp Haven and is anxious to begin this fun project. She has seen first-hand how these wonderful creatures reside and is full of inspiration for her demonstration.

Please visit Artisans during this wonderfully unique exhibit. The Texas Hill Country is an animal-loving community and it is our belief this area is perfect for learning about the needs of Chimp Haven ... mixed in with some very fun art!
